Seriously, where do I even start from. Months of preperation (though undoubtedly the SC Adhoc prepared a lot longer and harder than us OGLs), just for these past 5 days. I would have blogged about each and every day of orientation, except for the fact that I reached home at 10+ every single day and all I did was shower and then sleep. After doing that for 5 days, I came home last night to see 32 unread emails in my inbox. But then again most of it was pretty useless newsletters and stuff like that…
And I just finished clearing my inbox of annoying unread messages after typing that last paragraph. Stuff like that is probably the reason why my blog posts are always so short because I’ll type halfway, remember I’ve got something else to do and thus sidetrack from the task at hand. And come to think of it this blog post is going a little bit off tangent now so I’d better get back to it.
To sum Orientation ’09 up: It was a blast.
For more detailed coverage, read below:
The first day of Orientation was pretty dry and boring (as expected). Freshmen came into VJC looking lost amongst all the hustle and bustle of Orientation, trudging through the registration process as well as searching for their OGs. Then when they finally find their OGs and sit down, they’re surrounded by a bunch of complete strangers, and with no one to talk to they turn to the only activity they could possibly do at that time: stone.
Meanwhile, SC and OGLs are fretting over all sorts of admin issues. Attendance, tying up of bags, ushering freshmen to the correct OG, collecting lunch money, distributing stuff like bandanas and the booklet, etc. It being the first day on the job, OGLs have absolutely no experience whatsoever as to how to go about carrying out instructions given by the SC. How long do we wait to see if our freshmen turn up? When do we order lunch? Where to put the bags? They’re not talking to each other, how’re we supposed to encourage them to do so with all the chaos around us? And despite all these problems and complications going on, plenty of J2s (including non-OGLs who step into the hall) are busy looking out for cute guys/girls among the freshmen.
The first day wasn’t all that interesting, despite the cheering as well as mass dance session. The freshmen obviously weren’t that into it, seeing as how they had just entered a brand new school and are met with crazy OGLs shouting and screaming and dancing weirdly. Guys from boy schools were busy acting cool, while girls were… well… I have no idea what the girls were thinking.
UPDATE: I forgot to add that we had station games on the first day as well, more of a school tour thing, but I completely forgot about it. The aim of the game was to let freshmen know the school a little bit better so that they wouldn’t get lost, but honestly, did anyone really believe they were going to keep track of where everything was instead of just following their OGLs around who’d be rushing them from station to station? It kind of ended up like a duller version of the dry games stations.
One thing though, I swear that metallic-molecular-thingamagum is there specifically for Orientation games, it’s aim is to give freshmen as bad a headache as possible while trying to count the number of bonds/balls.
