i dont know what to say. Even though i did not speak throughout the entire competition, i was still stunned by yesterday’s quarter finals results. We lost to nanyang in the quarters.
I’m not too familiar with moz, mark and lum’s team. but from what i saw last time, they seemed unbeatable. no, wait i correct that, they WERE unbeatable. but the unbeatable are still beaten. Sometimes by really great teams, like the RI match, and sometimes the reason as to why they lost to anglican high is still a great mistory various philosophers might want to think about in the future. In short, mark’s year deserved at least a finalist, and it’s sad they didnt. Bur of course, they managed to bag the vj’s (i think) and the NUS challenge shield, bringing quite a bit of attention to the cat high debating society.
I still remember the previous yellow badges team though. kenneth kang, feng yao, shawn, bryan wong, nicholos dom, marvin etc. they were great, though not as astounding as mark’s year, still an excellent team of debaters. Bryan cha was also in kenneth kang and feng yao’s team, even though he was only sec 3. I still remember their JG’s. I dont want to talk about it, i juz feel sorry for them, not winning anything.
Then came this year’s JG’s and yesterday’s match. The prelim rounds were exciting enough, with us winning ACS I and one other school which i cant remember now, and also narrowlly beating MGS in the third round, allowing us to break first into the quarter finals. But then came along NYGH, and bryan, andre and tze kai’s hopes for a JG’s championship. It was sad, it seemed that we would almost definately win after the debate was over. But alas, the judges didnt agree with us. Yes, i have to agree to some extent that Tze Kai didn’t perform up to his usual standard, maybe it was because of what he did before the match. But however, he still did not do a bad job at all. And i have to say that bryan’s 3rd OP speech was one of the best if not THE best i’ve seen him make. And andre’s performance was great, if not almost perfect. All in all, it looked as if we would sail through to the semi’s quite smoothly. But everything turned wrong. We lost on a split decision. It was a hard blow, to all of us, the team, the seniors, juniors, and everyone in the room. Andre said that one of the NYGH teachers even came over to him after that and told him that he deserved to win hands down, and she did not know why we had lost to them. All in all, everyone was really disappointed in the end. I cried, yes, i did, later on in the courtyard, when tze kai told xander “sorry”. but of course he did not have much to be sorry about. But after the match he had misteriously disappeared, luckily he was found by amoz, among all the seniors in cat high debates history, i think he was the most suitable person who should have found him. I think only he was smart, cool, and collected enough to calm tze kai down. He really looked as if he was going to commit suicide later on. In the end, all of us went to the nearby mac’s to eat. with tze kai and moz staying behind to see the some other matches. But i must say, andre’s “performance” later on really made everyone laugh and lighten the mood a lot. too bad i cant say what he did…. :p
all in all, it’s sad to see bryan and andre leave cat high like that. both got ranked at NCS, and bryan got a few other rankings in other competitions. But with all their rankings, not a single championship was seen on their achievements list. Which is really really sad. After all they’ve done for this CCA, they got nothing back in return. Both of you will be missed dearly, by me, the team, and of course all the juniors. I wish you two the best of luck with your O lvls and anything else you plan to do.
Also, after this lost, i suddenly realise that it’s my turn to step up to the front. along with tze kai, thomas, arianto, Jo en, wee seng, colin. We’re the blue badges, the next in line to represent cat high. It’s a tough challenge, i have to admit, im quite bad comparing to other school debaters i know. I hope i’ll improve in time for the zero carbon debates. i hope im ready. i hope i won’t let my seniors down.
Oh and one last word to xander. He seldom reads blogs, but i still have to say something about him. With the depature of Bryan and Andre, Alexander leaves with them too, our second debating coach in cat high history. It just occured to me today that the last time i saw him at mac’s last night might very well be one of the last times, if not the last time i’ll ever see him. But still, thanks a lot xander, you’ve guided me and the rest of the team well, imparting into us your knowledge of common affairs and what not. But of course you’ve also learnt something very important from us…… how to play dota…. lol. You’ve been an excellent coach to all of us, and i wish you all the best in your law exams and everything else in your life. i hope that i’ll see you again in the near future, once again, thank you, for everything.
And i welcome back Kevin into the cat high debating society, this time as our new coach. I hope with your help, the cat high debates society will rise to new heights.
This is the end of what has got to be the longest and most serious post i’ve posted on my blog since its creation in dec 2004. And i think it’s the most sad one too. On a final note, i’d like to wish xander, bryan chan, and andre all the best once again. All three of you will be missed.
